Vestibular Neuronitis

This is an inflammation (-itis) of the vestibular nerve (neuro) usually caused by a virus. This is an acute condition and presents with sudden onset of spinning lasting hours associated with nausea and vomiting.

Treatment

  1. High dose steroids – Prednisolone 1mg/kg for one week is recommended
  2. Antiemetics – this is for nausea and vomiting. Prochlorperazine, Cinnarizine, Metoclopramide are commonly used
  3. Vasodilators – betahistine (Serc) for two to four weeks is usually prescribed
  4. Rest – bed rest is necessary while symptomatic. Proper sleep is key to recovery and sedatives are used if necessary.
